OneStar: Strategies to Achieve Social Impact

OneStar Board Members

OneStar Foundation Board (OSF): The OneStar Foundation Board, appointed by the Governor, oversees the mission and vision of OneStar to improve the lives of Texans.  It also provides administrative and support services to the National Service Commission, a nonprofit corporation affiliated with OneStar and managed by the OneStar National Service Commission Board (see below).

OneStar National Service Commission Board (OSNSC):  The National Service Commission Board, whose officers are appointed by the Governor, promotes volunteerism in Texas and oversees the administration of the AmeriCorps programs for the state as prescribed and authorized by the national Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

Biographies

 


Beverly Ashley-Fridie has lived in the Rio Grande Valley for almost 20 years. She has traveled throughout the country providing training on board development, strategic planning and instructional technology. In addition, Ashley-Fridie has served in leadership and volunteer roles at ten different nonprofits. She earned her doctorate in education leadership from The University of Texas-Pan American in 2006.

 

Nancy Bowlin Rasnick is the Marketing Director of The Bosworth Company. She has served on the boards of Casa de Amigos, United Way of Midland, Desk and Derrick and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.  She was active in the Midland Arts Assembly, Leadership Midland, the city's Summer-in-the-City Committee, the Midland Symphony Guild and the Permian Basin Petroleum Association. She received her bachelor's degree in education from The University of Texas at El Paso.

 

Aranda (Randi) Cooper is Volunteer Supervisor and Permanency Specialist for CASA of Deep East Texas. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in secondary education at Stephen F. Austin State University. Prior to graduate school, Randi served as an AmeriCorps*VISTA member with the St. Bernard Project in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana and as a corps member in AmeriCorps*NCCC.

 

 

 

Laura Duran is a marketing and communications consultant and project manager with LD Strategies. She has 10 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, and was formerly the Executive Director of the Hispanic Scholarship Consortium and the Director of Membership and Fund Development for the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. An advocate for diversity, community engagement, and servant leadership, Laura is a member and volunteer with several organizations that  empower youth and promote personal and professional growth through education, leadership, and self-sufficiency. Laura earned a Master of Business Administration from Baylor University and a Bachelor's in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from The University of Texas at El Paso.  

 


Beau Egert currently serves as Special Assistant to the Chairman at Mosbacher Energy Company. Prior to joining Mosbacher, he worked in private equity in the energy industry. He also is a former employee of OneStar Foundation, where he served as the first statewide director of the Governor's Faith-Based and Community Initiative and directed program and initiative development efforts. Egert holds a bachelor's degree from Baylor University and a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University.

 

Bruce Esterline has had a 35-year career in the government and nonprofit sectors. In 1992, he was elected Vice President of the Grants department at the Meadows Foundation. Prior to that, he served as a Program Specialist in the Meadows Foundation's Grants department. Esterline holds a bachelor's degree in history from Stanford University and a master's degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin.

Larry Goddard is the Director of the Tyler ISD Foundation. Goddard has been elected Citizen of Year (East Texas Council of Governments); 2010 Texas' Communicator of Year (top education public relations honor); and a leader with national/international arenas of board training, management, public relations and fundraising. He is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).  An ordained clergy, he has traveled to seven continents including Antarctica and is a feature writer for IN magazine (42,000 subscribers.)

 

 

Joanie Amacker Haley is the Executive Director of the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, where she handles the charitable giving program. She has also been Executive Director of the Houston Texans Foundation and a teacher at Spring Branch ISD. Haley has participated in the boards and committees of several nonprofits, including Camp For All, the Neuhaus Education Center and Spring Branch ISD.

 

Charlotte Keany is Director of Consulting for the Center for Nonprofit Management leading the Social Enterprise Consulting practice. She is a partner with Dallas Social Venture Partners and a member of the Social Enterprise Alliance. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from San Francisco State University and a master’s degree in Business Administration from West Texas State University.

 

 

Mary M. Keller serves as the President & CEO of the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) and one of the founders of the non-profit organization that serves around the world as an advocate for military children.  She has served as a teacher and school administrator in Texas for over 21 years, with 8 years as assistant superintendent and area superintendent for education services for the Killeen Independent School District.  She earned her doctorate at Texas Tech University and holds several professional certifications, including a mediation certification from the Texas Bar Association.  She is the chief researcher and author for the US Army's Secondary Education Transition Study (2000) and school transition study for the US Pacific Command (2005).  She has authored several publications including The Military Child:  Mobility and Education for Phi Delta Kappa (1998).

Cathy Landtroop is Principal of Landtroop Strategies, serving the West Texas area. She has chaired, managed and consulted on a variety of political campaigns, ranging from local and regional races to U.S. congressional races. In addition, she is an experienced fundraiser and event coordinator.

 

Robert G. Marbut Jr. is President and CEO of Haven for Hope in San Antonio, and a tenured professor at Northwest Vista College. His experience includes serving as a White House staffer in the Executive Office of President George H. W. Bush, Chief of Staff for Special Projects and Politics for Mayor Henry Cisneros and lecturer positions at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State University and the University of Incarnate Word. Marbut has also served as a city councilmember and Mayor Pro-Tem of San Antonio. He holds several degrees, including a doctorate in government from The University of Texas at Austin.

 



Connie Roberts is owner of Coordinating Events, an event planning company. She has been involved in community service since 1999 in various roles, including terms of service on the El Paso Mountain Committee and the Northeast Civic Leaders Association. She has also been a Foundation Trustee for the Northeast El Paso Rotary Foundation.

 



Scott C. Sanders recently created Womens3D, an early stage medical technology company. He also consults for life science companies looking to position their research and commercialization projects. He was a founding Board Member and Oversight Committee member of The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. In addition, he is the former owner and CEO of RiverCity Sportswear. Sanders received a bachelor's degree in political science from Texas Tech University in 1993.

 

 

Dolores Schwertner is Director of the Concho Valley RSVP program. She serves on the National Senior Corps Association Board and was instrumental in establishing the Texas Senior Corps Directors Association. She is an experienced nonprofit and volunteer manager serving on numerous local boards and councils.

 

Art Serna of Kyle is Contract Policy/QA Team Lead for the Department of Family and Protective Services. He is an AmeriCorps alumni and a past board member for Rosebuds Inc. He has worked as a youth program coordinator with Family Forward. Serna received his bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin, and his master's degree in management of technology from The University of Texas at San Antonio.

 

Robert Scott was appointed Commissioner of Education by Governor Rick Perry in 2007. In this role, Mr. Scott serves as the head of the Texas Education Agency, which oversees the state’s 1,200 school districts and charter schools. Previously, Scott was appointed chief deputy commissioner, a position in which he was responsible for the daily operations of the agency and the implementation and execution of key statewide initiatives. He has long been considered one of the most thoughtful and innovative education policy experts in state government. He received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

 Nora Ibáñez Hancock (Robert Scott Designee) is Associate Commissioner for the Office of Planning, Grants and Evaluation at the Texas Education Agency. Prior to that, she served as a career educator for 28 years, including 18 years as a district administrator of special programs. Among her many degrees is a doctorate in educational leadership from a joint doctoral program through Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

   

Lewis Timberlake, of Lewis Timberlake & Associates, is well known for his seminars, speeches and training programs. A retired life insurance salesperson, he serves as a visiting lecturer and management consultant for large corporations, and has written and facilitated highly respected management programs. He has held leadership roles in the Texas Jaycees, the U.S. Jaycees, the Texas Baptist Men's Association and the Texas Baptist Leadership Foundation.

   

Reymundo “Rey” Torres is Manager of the Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Lubbock. He has been an active member of the Lions Club, the Texas Funeral Directors Association, the RSVP Advisory Council and the American Red Cross. In addition, he has worked closely with the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall Experience and the Dignity Memorial Homeless Veterans Burial Program, and has been a grief-training presenter at Fort Bliss.

   

Charles B. (Chuck) Wall is CEO of Blue Ocean Discovery, a business growth advisory firm, specializing in Blue Ocean Strategy consulting and voice-of-the-customer insight research. He has over three decades of diverse business and entrepreneurial leadership experience across a variety of industries including manufacturing, technology, media and marketing. He has worked with companies ranging from Fortune 500’s to start-ups including Campbell’s Soup, Intel, HP, Mercury General, Sears, Texas A&M, CNBC, Coca Cola, Holt Cat and SWS Securities. Chuck regularly speaks to business groups and leads workshops about what he calls “uncommon sense entrepreneurship”, modern marketing and Blue Ocean Strategy. He has taught at Texas A&M University, Trinity University and The University of the Incarnate Word. He received his bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University.

 

Robert “Bob” Wright II founded Dallas Social Venture Partners. He is a Senior Vice President and General Counsel at BakBone Software, Inc., and an adjunct professor teaching social sector entrepreneurship at The University of Texas at Dallas. Wright has served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Skywire Software, LLC, practiced law at Jenkens & Gilchrist, P.C. and created and managed the game companies ION Storm and Edge of Reality.
