On April 21, 2009, President Barack Obama signed legislation (the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act) that, for the first time, authorized the establishment of 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. On September 10, 2009, President Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation that officially designated September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

You can participate in this important observance by posting your plans to perform a good deed or service project on 9/11 or on another day of your choosing. Then, during the course of the year, continue keeping your eyes open for people who may need a helping hand, and assist if you can. It's all about keeping alive the remarkable spirit of unity and service that we all shared after the 9/11 attacks.

What you decide to do, and who you help, is entirely up to you.
